Re: North Leigh v MERTHYR
It was a hard fought game today but on the balance of play we deserved our win with a much better second half performance.
Playing up the slope (a cross between Chard & Hungerford) in the first half on a good surface we never really got out of the starting blocks with us finding it hard to play our usual one touch play. We did threaten but created little whereas on the other hand North Leigh used the slope well to put us under pressure with long balls being played forward and we did make a few mistakes. Firstly Badger attempted to chest the ball back to Gilo but he left it a bit short allowing an NL forward to sneak in but Gilo made a good save at his feet. Then Rewbs played a ball across the back which put Colborne in trouble and he was robbed by an NL forward and despite a hint (putting it kindly) of hand ball the referee allowed him to go through and smash the ball past Gilo. We did create a few half chances from set pieces we managed to obtain (from an over fussy referee) but didn't really trouble the NL keeper who was being likened to a fat Matthew Harris throughout the game!
We started off the second half well and with Mystic Meg (AKA Paul Williams - Willo's old man) predicting a 3-1 win and Marcus had a good chance when he was sent through but Fatty made a good save. We continued to press with NL playing largely on the break but couldn't score and we changed it with Aaron & the thin Matthew Harris replacing Scouser & Newms. Shortly after that we equalised which was no surprise but the scorer was surprising! Good play in the middle set Prosser free on the right hand side of the 18 yard area. He turned well and put a good ball back into the middle where Badger was on hand to send a good right foot shot past the keeper from about 10 yards much to the delight of the player himself and the travelling faithful. 5 minutes later Prosser we released by Cornwall and he sent in a superb right foot shot past the keeper from a fairly narrow angle on the right hand side of the 6 yard box. He struck it really well and beat Fatty for pace and further delight ensued. It was a bit end to end after that with NL pressing particularly on their right hand flank but we defended well, albeit desperately on times and Rewbs had to clear off the line from a corner. Marcus, who had a good game was replaced by Preeny and it was he who chased down a back pass and robbed the keeper but it did send him out to the left of the 18 yard area. He turned and with the keeper scrambling back he could easily have shot but instead he unselfishly squared the ball back to Prosser who put it gleefully into the back of the net with both the keeper and a defender helpless for a well deserved 2nd goal and our 3rd. He had a half chance for his hat trick but the keeper made a good save. Prosser was my MOTM today as he had a hand in all 3 goals and did well overall.
We were worthy winners today and with the other results going our way we have made significant progress. It's still going to be hard to get past those above us but if we play to our potential I wouldn't put it past this bunch of boys. Whoever comes into the team fits in well, knows his job and gets on with it and a lot of credit for that goes to Shep & Danny.
Onwards and upwards!
