The draw for the quarter- finals (3rd Round) in full:

Port Talbot v Barry Town/Merthyr Town or Cambrian & Clydach.
The New Saints v Penybont.
Bala Town v Llandudno or Rhyl.
Prestatyn Town v Bangor City

Ties due to be played on September 23rd or 24th - we play Bridgwater away in the League on Tues Sept 23rd- surely not another postponement!?

If we beat Barry/Clydach & Cambrian/Port Talbot. I hope we get a home tie against any team left in the Cup, or away to Penybont, as it'll be a long trek away to Mid/North Wales for a midweek game.

A midweek trip to say Bangor would not be great with the league games we would have to play on the weekends before hand and after

As was pointed out to me on Saturday, there's a possibility we might not have a game on the weekend after (27th September) if Evesham United are still in the FA Cup.

Evesham are at home to Redditch United next Saturday - a Premier Division side, so we'll have to wait and see!

OK, a couple of things here for the statisticians - anyone know when (if ever) Merthyr have:

1. Won two games in a row by 7-1
2. Scored 7 goals in successive games

Merthyr rang the changes but were too good for a Barry side which missed a few scoring chances, including a second-half "sitter". Attendance of 288 was good considering Wales were playing.
Merthyr took their goals well, including the volley from Kerry Morgan. Adie Harris looked in control playing at the back and Corey Jenkins again showed plenty of speed and determination, also taking his penalty well after being fouled.

Barry Town United vs Merthyr Town Empty Re: Barry Town United vs Merthyr Town

The Merthyr team last night was –

Gilo
Dan, Adie, Jarrad & Adam
Leekie, Matthew, Newms
Traylor, Prosser & Corey

Subs – Bradley, Kerry, Kayne & Gav

With Willo & Greeny absent through illness SJ made changes with Gilo, Pross & Corey making their first starts of the season.  We attacked from the off on a perfect playing surface conducive to the type of football we like to play.  Corey Jenkins was seeing a lot of the ball early on making inroads down the left.  From a throw taken by Adam, Corey received the ball who sent it back to the thrower, who in turn found Matthew and he sent a good ball down the line to Corey who got past the fullback and sent in a good cross which was met by Prosser’s right foot but the Barry keeper made an excellent save to keep the ball out and Barry scrambled it clear.

Our constant pressure told when Adie Harris sent a good long cross field ball out to the danger man Jenkins on the left and he sent in a great cross into the area and he found Traylor who sent in a left foot shot from about 8 yards across the keeper and into the net.  The goal was timed at 5 minutes but I thought it was nearer 3 minutes as that was my Golden Goal ticket however I failed to convince Tim Johnson of that fact so I didn’t win the £20 prize.

We were playing some excellent football an example of which was when Traylor broke into the Barry half and found Pross who held the ball up well before sliding it to Dan who passed to Adie.  He passed it to Matthew who looked up and passed it onto Newman in the centre circle who gave it back to Matt who in turn found Adam Davies on the left and he ran at the Barry #2 before sliding it out further left to Corey who crossed it to Traylor who mistimed his shot and Barry cleared.  Prosser then had a good mazy run where he beat 3 or 4 Barry defenders before sending in a shot from the edge of the 18 yard area which went just wide of the keeper’s left hand post.  Up until then Barry had shown very little going forward but they did manage one break down the right but the cross was easily cleared by Matthew Harris.  We were attacking also constantly and both Trayls & Jenkins had shots charged down by the resolute Barry defence, Leekie had a shot from about 25 yards which went just wide of the post and Matthew also had a shot from about 18 yards which went straight into the keeper’s arms.

After about 25 minutes we got our richly deserved second goal when Prosser broke into the 18 yard area and he passed it to Newman who sent in a shot from about 5 yards, under the keeper and into the net.

The Barry defence was under almost constant pressure and were making last ditch tackles and good blocks and we gained several corners.

Prosser then broke down the left and got it inside to Newman who looked up and gave it to Corey on the touchline, who gave it back to Newman who pushed it down to Adam Davies who crossed to Leekie, who sent in a diving header towards goal but the keeper leapt to his right and he pushed the ball around the post for yet another corner.  Newman took the corner high into the area and Jarrad got to it first and headed it back towards the 6 yard area and Prosser put a right footed shot high into the roof of the net from 4 yards on about 43 minutes for his first goal of the season which gave the scoreline a much more realistic look.  After more Merthyr pressure with Barry defending in numbers the referee blew the half time whistle with the Mighty Martyrs winning 3-0.
Adam Davies was replaced by Gavin Williams at the start of the 2nd half and took a place in midfield with Newman moving to left back.  Barry did start the second half positively and Billing managed to get a shot away which was blocked by the Merthyr defence.  They then sent in a cross from the left which was easily cleared by Wright.

Then the ball rebounded off a Merthyr defender and it went into the Barry half and Prosser picked it up and approached the Barry area and as the keeper came to close him down he dinked the ball delightfully over the keeper from about 7 yards and into the net for his second goal of the night and Merthyr’s 4th on about 50 minutes and if the game wasn’t out of Barry’s reach before, it certainly was now.

To their credit Barry still kept trying and gained a free kick on their left after a tackle by Adie Harris which earned him a booking but the kick when it came into the area was headed wide.  They also had a long range effort which just cleared the Merthyr bar and then the Barry #10 shot high over the bar after the Merthyr defence lost the ball deep in our half.  They then sent a good ball across the field which was picked up by the Barry #7 who approached the area but his shot went just wide of Gilo’s right hand post for a goal kick to Merthyr.  We were still doing our fair share of attacking with Leek prominent and Summerfield was making good progress down the right.  Gavin was prompting from the deep and Corey ran up our left, cut inside the full back and pushed it back to Leekie just outside the area but his shot went across the keeper but just wide of his left hand post.  Prosser put in a good header from yet another Jenkins cross which just cleared the bar.

On about the hour mark, Traylor & Matthew were replaced by Kerry & Kayne with Kerry donning the captain’s armband for the rest of the game.  Shortly afterwards poor Merthyr passing allowed Billing to run clear but he put his shot well wide of the Merthyr goal with Gilo coming out to narrow the angle.  Barry then got their first corner of the game when Leekie made a good tackle on the Barry #10 but it was easily cleared by Newman at the near post.

Then after some good passing by Merthyr it went out to the right where it was picked up by Kayne McLaggon who carried it into the area, slipped it to Ryan Prosser who advanced a couple of yards before slipping it wide of the keeper and into the net for his hat trick and Merthyr’s 5th goal of the night on roughly the 70th minute.

On about the 75th minute Newman took a throw on the Merthyr left and found McLaggon down the line who was faced by the Barry #4 but he put the ball into the area where it was partially cleared but only as far as Kerry Morgan, who from the left hand side of the 18 yard area sent in a sweet right footed volley into the net for Merthyr’s 6th.

Merthyr were dealing easily with the Barry attacks and from a clearance, Corey Jenkins picked up the ball on the left, got into the area where he was brought down by the Barry #2 for a penalty to Merthyr.  Corey got up, dusted himself down and although he slipped as he took the kick, his right footed shot went high into the net much to the disgust of the Barry keeper who had a hissy fit and hoofed the ball high into the stand and earned himself a booking in the process.

Merthyr had scored their 7th goal making it 2 consecutive games where we were in seventh heaven.  Sorry about that – I must be mixing with Phil Howells too much!

Barry kept on seeking a consolation as we searched for our 8th with Kayne going the closest when his shot across the keeper hit the outside of his right hand post and away to safety, and they finally got it in the very last knockings of the game when Jarrad Wright lost the ball in the Barry half and they broke quickly down the right and the ball came in and the Naji (I think) shot it wide of Gilo from about 6 yards, giving him no chance.

It was not a totally one sided game but the 7-1 scoreline reflects the gulf in our respective leagues and ability.  Ryan Prosser’s 3rd goal of the night was his 100th as a Merthyr Town player in only 169 appearances, quite a few of which have been off the bench and for that he was my MOTM last night with Corey Jenkins a close second.  Prosser’s 2nd goal was a delight to watch but was probably bettered by Kerry’s volley which was world class.  We bossed the game from start to finish and it made for a very pleasant evening in the Vale but £2.50 for a portion of chips was just too much to pay.  Luckily I managed to pinch one of Boz’s when he wasn’t looking.

Barry never stopped trying and it’s great that their supporters are getting the club moving forward again after years of misownership which is something we know only too much about.

A free weekend coming up and it’s onwards an upwards to Clydach Vale in the deepest, darkest Rhondda next Wednesday on a 3G pitch upon which we should feel at home.  What’s the odds on another 7 goals?  If I were a betting man I’d certainly put a few shillings on it!
