70 years ago today Merthyr Tydfil won the Southern League Championship in dramatic fashion as they beat Bedford Town 5-1 with goals from Hullett (3), Jarman and Reynolds. The league leaders Colchester United were held 0-0 at Jenner Park by Barry Town so the Martyrs won the title on goal average.
