Sad to hear of the passing of John Lloyd, one of the greats of Welsh sports journalism, who spent 40 years on the Daily Express. John was one of life's real characters who never forgot his Merthyr roots and was also well known on the London showbiz circuit with Dorothy Squires and Shirley Bassey among his numerous friends. True, John wrote under the name of Candac for the Merthyr Express, following on from the original Candac, the distinguished Merthyr-born David Cole who became the youngest editor of the Western Mail at the age of 27 and eventually managing director and chairman of Thomson Regional Newspapers. His full name was Claude Neville David Cole - so that's how the Candac column originated. RIP John.

Didn't know the reason for CANDAC but do now .

Alas another Martyr leaves us - let's hope he can remembered somehow- perhaps in the Hall of Fame if appropriate.

To All,

I'm sure Mr Lloyd was a fantastic journalist with his time at 'CANDAC' and further endeavors. It is also great to acknowledge the previous founder, David Cole, my grand-father who was also Merthyr born and bred with a passion of journalism and sports. I sure they both worked and shared their knowledge with another.
