Just got in from work. Great result for the lads. Two Saturdays in a row we've been 2-0 down and won 3-2. Gutted to have missed the game.

And what makes this even sweeter, is that Cirencester could only draw 2-2 at home against Fleet

I'll see if I can get a few of the boys from the pub to visit the Cigg-E in a fortnight's time.

Re: MERTHYR v Paulton Rovers
Today's team:
Cutlan;
Summerfield,Rewbury,Colborne,S.Williams;
Leek,Wright,G.Williams;
M.Griffiths,Charles,Morgan;
Subs:
McLaggon for Griffiths after about 57 minutes
Harris for Wright after about 60 minutes
Newman for Morgan after about 87 minutes
Prosser
Dodds
Ian Traylor was not present - presumably injured? Jarrad Wright kept his place in the side in midfield.
In the first minute Jamie Rewbury found himself in the referee's book after a foul on (I think) Nick McCootie near the halfway line.
Paulton took the lead after less than 4 minutes when there seemed no real danger with a player running in from the right, but his shot from 25 yards deflected off a defender and went high into the net to give Giles Cutlan no chance. It was almost 2-0 a minute later when an attacker was found on the right of the area and his shot across goal clipped the far post.
We were looking really out of sorts and couldn't mount any worthwhile attacks, and Paulton's second goal came after about 20 minutes. They broke down the right, worked the ball across the edge of the penalty area until there was a player free, and he calmly put the ball over Cutlan.
But we pulled a goal back after about 27 minutes with our first goalscoring attempt. Kerry Morgan took a long throw on the left which was headed on for Jamie Rewbury to stoop and put a header in off the far post. A few minutes later another Morgan long throw on the left almost brought a second goal, but when this was headed on Rewbury was off balance in the middle of the area and could only put his shot high over the bar.
After about 34 minutes following a Gavin Williams free kick out on the right we had a header cleared off the line, and as we finally began to put our game together there was a good cross from the left by Ryan Charles which Marcus Griffiths was just unable to reach at the far post. Then about 3 minutes before half time there was a flying save from the goalkeeper to push a great 25-yard shot from Gavin Williams round the post.
We deservedly equalised about 4 minutes after the break after some solid work by Kris Leek. Dan Summerfield then put over a fine cross for Kerry Morgan to head in from 6 yards.
There was a good bit of work by Jarrad Wright to force Paulton's dangerous Nick McCootie away from goal, resulting in a shot off target.
Kayne McLaggon replaced Marcus Griffiths after about 57 minutes, and a few minutes later Matthew Harris replaced Jarrad Wright in the deep midfield role.
There was a great piece of work by Ryan Charles after 67 minutes when he beat at least 3 players down the right, but his ball across was miskicked by Kayne McLaggon.
We won the game with the goal of the season by Gavin Williams. He got the ball a good 35 yards out in the middle and sent in a perfect shot which flew into the net over the keeper and under the bar.
We held on for the win without too much trouble with about 5 minutes of added time, but to be fair there had been a couple of longish stoppages for treatment to Paulton players.
Well, I wish we wouldn't keep giving teams two goal starts! Paulton were a better side than North Leigh last week - although maybe pretty ordinary in defence. At 2-0 up they were well on top and at that time it was difficult to see us getting anything out of the game the way we were playing, but we stuck at it, and pulled goal back at a good time. After that Paulton never looked as good again, whether that was down to us raising our game or them sitting back I don't know. But they certainly looked happy to settle for a draw for most of the second half. Maybe that was their downfall.
Difficult to choose a man of the match between two players. I'd say narrowly Kris Leek for his drive in midfield, but Ryan Charles gave a tremendously hard-working performance up and down the pitch despite nominally being the central striker. His work in helping out the midfield and even defence really made a difference.
You wouldn't see a better-struck shot than that from Gavin Williams - just a pity Martyrs TV was unable to be there to preserve it to watch over and over again.
After the first 25 minutes or so we looked pretty solid in defence.
Good to see another attendance in the 400s despite Cardiff being at home. People certainly do get their money's worth in terms of goals with Merthyr!
So we increase our lead at the top with ALL the other results going our way.

Thanks - perhaps you could get to a game or two more often yourself? Like I said - plenty of goals on offer this season!

Re: MERTHYR v Paulton Rovers
For the neutrals in the crowd the last 2 league games have been tremendous entertainment but for the committed (and maybe we should be) Merthyr fan they have also been nail biting. Paulton looked a much better side than North Leigh but I was a bit more comfortable in the 2nd half today (just the 3 fags) as they seem to have shot their bolt after the first 25 minutes and we pressed them back whereas last week we allowed NL to come at us.
In that first 20-25 minutes, Paulton played us off the park, playing like us! No doubt their early goal buoyed them up which I thought Gilo should have got to, as it was just above his head, but he may have been blinded by the sun (and as Rustic says he should have been wearing a cap) and their 2nd was a good footballing goal - a good finish after some good interplay on the right. Whether they thought they had done enough I don't know but as soon as Rewbs pulled one back with a brave header that was the end of it for them and we could easily have equalised before half time. Kerry again showed his prowess in the air (similar to Cliff Jones in the 60's) to score with a very good header from an excellent cross by Dan and Leekie did ever so well to get the ball to Dan. We had quite a few chances but the goal Gavin scored was worthy enough to win any game at any level and worth the entrance fee alone. It was a long way out but he hit it so sweetly into the top corner and the keeper had no chance. There were over 400 there again today and I think we had the 3rd highest crowd in the whole Southern League and with the entertainment being served up hopefully the word will be spread and maybe we'll get 500 for our next home game.
With the other results going with us today this was a very important 3 points and we deserved them and we disposed of one of our bogey sides of the last 2 seasons. We are at Shortwood next week and we have been one of their bogey sides where we have ground out results and Shortwood have been very unlucky not to get something out of some very close games - excluding the Red Insure game a few months ago. Hopefully we'll retain that status!
