Who is the oldest Martyr?
A question was posed at the game today and would enquire as to who is the oldest living Martyrs Fan still watching the matches at the CiggE Stadium?
There are a number of octogenarians but who is the oldest and who is the longest viewing fan?
Answers on a postcard or this Forum.

Re: Who is the oldest Martyr?
In a fairly recent edition of the match programme Robert Evans wrote of first seeing Merthyr play in 1949, but I daresay there are some who could go back further than that.
I wonder if there's anyone still around who has any memory of the old Merthyr Town? Last game was in 1934.

I remember Len Sankey telling me last season that he started watching the Martyrs in 1946, that will take some beating. My first game at the Park was 1958, just a boy!!

Re: Who is the oldest Martyr?
The reason I posed the question is that My Uncle Granville is 82 but despite his aching muscles and joints he still makes the effort home and where possible away ....I know he is not alone in making such a Herculean effort.....that Mr McCarthy is older than him....as is superfan Len Sankey....Arthur Manuel from Aberfan is also up there too....the point I am making is that these guys deserve a special mention....loyalty to one Club for all these years is such a rare but admirable quality and worthy of a mention as an achievement in itself.....long may they continue....lets hope we get a centarian fan soon too....Boz

All the names mentioned are great characters. We are lucky to have people who have consistently supported and stood by the club for so many years.

Re: Who is the oldest Martyr?
According to Philip Sweet's book, the score in the Welsh League match against Nantymoel in 1945 was 11-1 to Merthyr. It was the first home league match for the new club, with a crowd of around 4,000.
It would be quite something if the gentleman mentioned was at that match and also at Taffs Well for the first home game of the new Merthyr Town.

Amazingly Merthyr scored 187 goals that season but still finished runners up to Lovell's Athletic!
