We've received a photograph of Merthyr Vale School team from 1919/20 who had won both the Keir Hardie Shield and Southey Cup. Anyone know any background to these Cup competitions and are they still around?

Also we received a lovely photo of the 1935 Welsh Schools cap awarded to Teifion Williams of Troedyrhiw School for his appearance for Wales that season v Scotland? Anyone know of this player's career after leaving school?

Thanks very much

Harry, I have a photograph of the Troedyrhiw Football team that won the South Wales and Mon Cup in 1911, in my family photo albums if you want a copy, (my Grandfather 'Fred Weaver' was in the team). Just send me your details and I will copy the photo and get it to you, there is a copy on the now defunct Troedyrhiw football club web site.

We're always looking for memorabilia for the proposed digital database to catalogue the history of football within Merthyr.

I can be contacted via wolvesy@yahoo.co.uk

Thanks

We're looking to find the grave of Moses Russell so we can renovate it if needed. Moses died in Caerwent/Chepstow area in 1946 so any info would be appreciated.

Thanks very much. Great info.

We'll take a pilgrimage there when the lockdown is over.

Some sad news received that former Merthyr team manager Fred Davies passed away last month (2nd Sept) at the age of 81. Fred was team manager in the mid 1980s and ran the Six Bells pub afterwards. He played in goal for Wolves, Cardiff and Bournemouth and went on to successfully manage Shrewsbury and Weymouth in the 1990s.

I think Southey would have been the owner of the Merthyr Express - Harry Wood Southey - when their office was in Glebeland Street and the printing presses in the basement, before they became part of Celtic Press and under Thomson Newspapers.
I doubt it still exists. Celtic Press did sponsor some Merthyr League competitions, and Mike Duffy, circulation manager, helped with arrangements for the Merthyr V Atalanta game in 1987,
