Shop crisis
Local businesses in Merthyr Tydfil are worried about their future, especially with the expansion of out-of-town retail developments.
But what about Dev's shop in Coronation Street? Mostly there is no-one there at all and if someone pops in, they just buy a packet of biscuits or a packet of chewing gum. Yet the store seems well-stocked.
I can't see the business lasting much longer.Even the late Blanche used to buy a few items!!!

Re: Shop crisis
Is that the shop that Mr Swindley used to run?

Re: Shop crisis
No, I think Mr Swindley had a fashion business!
And what worries me is the problems Ken Barlow has suffered!
His mother died after being run over by a bus, his first wife was electrocuted with a hair-dryer, his second wife committed suicide, when Deirdre left him for Mr Rashid, he was murdered on the canal path, then Ken's step-daughter Tracey was jailed for murdering her partner.
Didn't Ken's daughter also died and his brother died abroad, I think. And his son Peter almost died last year in that tram incident!
And still Ken is a regular user of the local library!!

Wasn't Ken's brother a professional footballer. Married Stan Ogden's daughter went to Australia.

Re: Shop crisis
Been trying to give it up for 50 years.
I think the Imp was thinking of Florrie Lindley.
Of course the shop was taken over by Betty Turpin's sister who brought up Betty's son, who went on to become chairman of Everton.

Re: Shop crisis
I stopped watching it in protest when they killed off Martha Longhurst.

Re: Shop crisis
Can't think of any football links to Martha Longhurst, unless she was related to David Longhurst who died on the pitch during a match for York City against Lincoln City in 1990, the first player to do so in the league for 69 years.
Were you there Imp?

Yes, I was at York that day. Something I'll never forget.
York later named a new stand after David Longhurst.

And I believe Minnie Caldwell's cat is no longer with us either.

I think Leonard Swindley's shop was called Glamma Garments and that Elsie Tanner worked there. Minnie's cat was called Bobby and use to appear on the opening credits. Can you still get Milk Stout which was the staple diet of Martha, Minnie & Ena?
I never watched the programme myself!

I think Elsie worked in the more upmarket Miami Modes. She lived in number 11 two doors down from from Danny Baldwin's house in later years. His son Warren played football for Weatherfield County, before moving to play in Spain.
Danny's wife Frankie also ran off with a footballer in Romania.
