Merthyr v Harrow Borough
Merthyr Town 1 Harrow Borough 1. This was, in fact,my pre-match forecast. It was a fairly poor first half but Merthyr pressed more after the turn-around, and stopped the Londoners making too much further progress in their play-offs bid. The Martyrs' own chances of finishing in the top five look not so good after one point from four games. But it is possible And there was a shock as Poole Town, fifth, were slammed 5-1 at Chesham. Also, third team Salisbury went down 2-1 at Kings Langley.Ben Swallow sent over plenty of Merthyr crosses but they were mainly headed away by the visitors' three big men at the back. Adam Pepera tried a speculative shot, more like a centre, from distance after 32 minutes and it sped to goal to the left of goalkeeper Lewis Webb. The equaliser was on 49 minutes, Ian Traylor finishing well after a neat pass in the box by former Cardiff City player Jamie Veale. The referee was busy with lots of yellow cards handed out.
With some fans still hoping for a play-off spot, others point out that Merthyr are also only seven points away from the relegation zone so it shows what can happen when there are play-off places to chase. A couple of wins can boost chances but a couple of defeats can seed a club slip nearer danger. I don't expect Merthyr to be in a relegation fight but at present, a top half place looks the most likely outcome.
Good to see former Merthyr striker Ian Mitchell at the game.
