One small step for Man?
After tonight, the Martyrs Fans should be ecstatic at the plans unveiled for our stadium.
Not only will it enhance the whole football experience on match day but it will bring a much needed boost to our wider Merthyr Community.
The effort of the Trust Board and the support from the Council has seen us go from being 'homeless' in Taff's Well- to being on the verge of having the finest stadium in the South Wales Valleys .
A beacon for all those disillusioned Premiership fans who have choked on their prawn sandwiches.
There is no real substitute for grass roots football - not even high dimension sky on a smart television-
This is another Pivotal moment in the clubs history- another Atalanta- another Walsall FACup moment-
Sadly, the hard work of the volunteer trust board and the Council did not appear to be appreciated by those present tonight.
People do not realise the hidden work that these people have to do faced with so much red tape- balancing conflicting interests- and all done on a shoestring in a recession hit era.
The hours of unpaid hard work and slog by those people - our Merthyr movers and shakers- and their supporting family- you must remember what their wives and husbands put up with...is not just a labour of love- it is akin to having a mistress.
Therefore , please remember we have come a long way in a short time.
I am grateful to have football of this level in Merthyr in the first place.
Yes it would nice to have two extra changing rooms and a capacity of 200 for weddings and other functions- but let's crawl before we can walk.
Things have changed since the 1980s ...how many weddings do you go to a year...not many...cost is prohibitive as is the lack of commitment these days.
I would rather be a BIG fish in a small pond and be financially stable than head the way of other Clubs who have overstretched.
Yes, the design might be viewed by some as being like a Health Park building or a Hospital or even that of a massive 'Jenga' game but it is Modern and will be built within the constraints of its location and existing problems and the limited budget available.
I for one think it is a marvellous project and all concerned need to be applauded and appreciated by the wider community for their diligence and vision.
There are those that DO and those that DON'T .
Only those that DO in my opinion deserve a voice.
It is the NOW we need to think about and be realistic about our ambitions.
Progress through stability and a stadium that will be the envy of away fans from across England & Wales for the next few decades.
It is for these reasons that Martyrs everywhere should rejoice and be 'over the moon'at the proposals.

Re: One small step for Man?
I was at the meeting tonight and fail to understand how
You can state the board were not appreciated? Each speaker
Was applauded and not one question was put until the speaker
Had completed his time.
This was a general meeting questions were asked answers
Given, because some members were not happy with the answers
Doesn't mean we do not appreciate the work done by the board
I was one of the question askers tonight and was not fully
Impressed by the answers, that is my prerogative,it's not about
He who do,s or he who doesn't
The doors were opened for all to be involved tonight.
I'm sorry to say your opinion tonight is way off the
Mark. Opinion is a wonderful thing which allows us
All to contribute.
I for one can't wait for the build to be completed
Congrats to all involved

Re: One small step for Man?
I think Boz was referring to one or two questions which the people asking didn't seem to be satisfied with the answers to despite the information given. In his posting he's perhaps over-emphasised this.

Re: One small step for Man?
Sorry cant agree with you, his reference says it all
There were a number of issues I was not happy with
One was the regarding viewing in the candac stand
It was stated viewing was paramount!!! When I asked why
The upright stanchions were not remove ,I was told
The grant was not for the existing football area ie
Stands ect it was to upgrade the building, the only reason
Some work is being carried out on stands is because
The inner as to look decent to express the outside
The council men stated if we had applied for money to
Upgrade the stand areas it would have been refused
Also I found it difficult to understand how the board could
Contempt trying too sort a contract company in seven
Days, there are eight companies to interview then
It would be shortlisted to perhaps tow or three
Second interviews ect,so seven days seems very
Somewhat impossible.
Again this is not a criticism just a observation.

Re: One small step for Man?
I was at the meeting last night & I have to applaud the Trust Board & the Council for this great initiative. The Upgrade of facilities will be the envy of most Sports organisations in the South East Wales Region.
As the architect said the project has been designed around the Constraints of the area available to build/upgrade in conjunction with the amount of Grant awarded & I for one think the whole design is superb and will enhance our Community Club tremendously and also help attract quality players to our Club.
Thank you to Meurig and the Board for your Vision and hard work in brining this Project to fruition. I look forward to it's completion when we will be the envy of many Football/Sports Clubs for miles around.

Re: One small step for Man?
I have commented on some of the questions raised on this thread under the thread publicising the meeting of 7 Jan.
Re: One small step for Man?
Couldn't make it last night... The evaluation of successful tenders in the time period mentioned (returns 29th Jan, outcome 2nd February - I could be wrong with these dates though) is almost impossible. Unless tenders are being assessed on a lowest price (compliant with specification) basis - that may give it a chance I suppose.
What's the Price / Quality criteria for the tender assessment?
And who are the eight(?) companies invite to tender?

Re: One small step for Man?
It was stated last night that prices was not a part of the criteria
So it's not lowest tender!!!
Don't think its possible to read through the portfolios
Of eight companies in such little time.
Hope I'm wrong

Re: One small step for Man?
Yes, it was stated that the tender accepted would not necessarily be simply the lowest one.
Personally, I've no experience or knowledge of these matters at all, but I'm prepared to accept what John Strand said on the other thread:
'The review of tenders will be carried out in a systematic measured way, with experienced professional help. The process will be audited by Welsh Government officers, so there will be no scope for not carrying out the process thoroughly.'

Re: One small step for Man?
I'm really sorry I couldn't make it last night to ask questions around the tender / evaluation process. My morbid curiosity I guess...
I think the evaluation of 8 tenders, and the issues that can arise from the evaluations, plus contractor clarifications, interviews etc. will take a minimum of 2 weeks, more likely to be 4 weeks.
If not enough time is allocated it will not be done thoroughly (in my opinion). Good luck to everyone involved, hope the best contractor wins!

If I remember correctly the names of the people who would be involved in evaluating the tenders were given last night - but I'm afraid I didn't make a note of them (being only an amateur journalist as mentioned before).

Would the plans we saw last night be available on the website at some point?

Burke Shelley and co on BBC4 last night! Remember seeing them in Rhydycar - seem to recall doing some work on the mixing desk! #ifIwasBritanniaIdwave the rules! #Brainsaladsurgery
Agree - Breadfan has to be the greatest intro ever. Not sure about the acoustic bit in the middle. Even Metallica couldn't do it justice. What a riff!!!
Ps. The drummer for Man lived near PP if I recall correctly... Their last album live at the roundhouse was god #bananas #12inchesofplasticwithaholeinthemiddle.

I think the Budgie song was 'Crash course in Brain Surgery'. 'Brain Salad Surgery' was a prog album by ELP.
Saw Budgie at The Granary club in Bristol many years ago but that was with John Thomas on guitar not the original Tony Bourge. :-(

So what are the plans exactly?
I remember a few years ago there were plans for a 12k stadium. What are the plans now.
Are there any photos?

That was about ten years ago! Nothing to do with the present Merthyr Town club.
I think the fullest details available online were in the club's August Newsletter:
