Wimborne v MERTHYR - Page 2 Empty Re: Wimborne v MERTHYR

Post  Old Sod Sun Dec 21, 2014 4:57 am

What a cracking day yesterday both on and off the pitch with the lads cruising past a useful Wimborne side and extending our lead at the top of the table.

With Leek and Williams (S) unavailable and Bradley suspended we lined up as follows –

Cutlan
Summerfield, Green, Wright & Davies
Harris, Williams (G) & Bauza
Traylor, McLaggon & Jenkins

Subs – Rewbury, Evans, Morgan, Prosser & Shallis

On a sloping pitch which looked a bit wet in places, particularly around the halfway line we kicked off playing up the hill.  The opening exchanges found both defences on top an example being when Williams played a long ball into the Wimborne half it was cut out by Brimson who pushed it up to the halfway line where he found Griffin.  He tried to get it forward to Davidson but over hit it and it went all the way through to Cutlan.  Cutlan sent a long kick up the field which was headed back towards goal by Maybury and with McLaggon trying to get onto it Harvell had to come out and make a good catch.

Wimborne were trying to come forward as much as they could and in the Merthyr half, Davidson found Stokoe who pushed it out wide to Brimson.  He came inside and was allowed to come an awful long way across the pitch, just outside our 18 yard area but Bauza got a tackle in and it rebounded back to Maybury who put down their left but Summerfield nipped in to head it clear towards Harris.  He gave it to Green who pushed it right to Traylor who gave it inside to Bauza but his ball forward, trying to find McLaggon went straight through to Harvell.

After a good period of possession, Wimborne gained a corner when a shot by Maybury cannoned off Green and away.  The corner came in from the left and Cutlan got in a good punch and cleared it about 40 yards away from goal out as far as Davidson but his ball into our area was well fielded by Cutlan.  He again sent a long clearance upfield which went straight through to Harvell and that summed up the game so far with both sides struggling against the opposition defences which were well on top.

We did manage to get a shot away when after a foul on Jenkins halfway inside the Wimborne half we had some neat interplay on the left involving Traylor, Harris & Wright the ball finally reached Williams who came inside and approached the Wimborne area and sent in a good shot which went just wide of Harvell’s right hand post and it was probably the best effort by either side so far. Merthyr were getting up a head of steam now and were making good progress up both flanks and Williams managed to find Bauza who got it through to McLaggon but he was well tackled by Maybury as he was about to pull the trigger and the ball ended up safely in the arms of Harvell.

We were getting in a few crosses which were being competently dealt with by Wimborne but then with about a half hour gone, we gained a free kick just outside the Wimborne area on the right after McLaggon was fouled by Maybury.  Williams took the kick high into the area and Wright got to it at the far post but his header was partially cleared out as far as Jenkins who gave it to Traylor who sent in a shot which was pushed out by Harvell to Wright who shot from about 4 yards into the back of the net with Harvell getting an arm to the ball but he couldn’t keep it out.  The Wimborne defenders were claiming offside but Wright was onside when Traylor took the initial shot which was well spotted by the lino.

Both sides were trying to attack but we were looking the more dangerous and after we gained a throw on our right deep in the Wimborne half, taken by Summerfield, Traylor received the ball close to the byline.  He crossed it to McLaggon who sent in a good shot on the turn with his right foot which went just wide of Harvell’s right hand post with the keeper struggling to get there.

Shortly afterwards, McLaggon broke into the Wimborne half and found Traylor on the right.  He gave it back to McLaggon on the edge of the area.  He broke inside the area and got it back to Traylor who went wide to the left and sent to ball towards goal where it was headed over his own bar by Blake.  Williams took the corner but Blake headed it out but only as far as Harris who headed it back in and it was again cleared but only as far as Jenkins who found Williams who gave it inside to Bauza.  He got it back to Williams who chipped it into the area where it was again cleared to Jenkins who found Bauza via Williams and then onto Jenkins and as he got it inside to Harris the referee blew for half time with Merthyr well on top and a goal to the good.

Merthyr had the slope in their favour in the second half and resumed their attacking play but Wimborne were defending manfully keeping us at arm’s length.  After breaking up one attack, Costello sent the ball forward into the Merthyr half where it was picked up by Gamble.  He was shadowed by Green but Gamble made progress towards the edge of our area and he tried to put the ball across but Green got in to get it away for a corner.  The Merthyr defence cleared the ball easily.

We were making some progress and when Harris picked the ball up in midfield he found Traylor on the right.  Traylor came inside towards the edge of the area, stopped and came inside again and got the ball across to Harris on the D and under pressure Harris managed to find Jenkins to his left who sent is a shot which Harvell did well to get to low to his right to make a good save.

Gamble was seeing a bit of the ball now and he got into the Merthyr half where he slipped it to Kemble who sent it wide to Griffin who crossed the ball in but it was well caught by Cutlan.  A few minutes later Stokoe also managed to get a header in which went wide of the Merthyr goal from a corner.

Shortly afterwards we also gained a corner when Jenkins got down the touchline on the Merthyr left and he beat Arnold but his cross was headed behind by Costello.  Harris took the corner short to Davies and back to Harris who found Williams but his cross was headed back and into Harvell’s hands by Maybury.

Wimborne then had their best chance of the game when Davidson picked the ball up on the halfway line.  He gave it to Stokoe who gave it back to Davidson on the left who was partially tackled by Harris but Davidson picked it up again who got in to good shot bringing out an excellent save from Cutlan own to his right and he got it away for a corner to Wimborne which came in towards Maybury but his shot was charged down and it came out to Jenkins who used his pace to break into the Wimborne half on the left and as he approached the goal line he got it back towards McLaggon but he was challenged by Arnold who cleared it up towards the halfway line where it was picked up by Kemble who got it outside to Stokoe who gave it to Gamble who got it towards Blake who had a shot from about 30 yards which was well saved by Cutlan low down at his left hand post.

At this stage it was fairly end to end although we were having more of the play and a Cutlan clearance into the Wimborne half where it was headed on by McLaggon to Jenkins who ran down the left hand touchline and gained a corner off Arnold.  Harris took the corner, short to Traylor who got it back to Harris who put the ball into the area where up went McLaggon who volleyed it with the outside of his right foot towards goal and Harvell got down to make a very good save.

Then on the 65th minute Merthyr broke into the Wimborne half when Jenkins went down the left hand side.  He got it inside to Bauza who in turn found McLaggon who was lurking wide right.  He came inside and got into the area close to the byline and when I thought he was going to square it to Bauza, McLaggon unleashed a superb shot from an acute angle past Harvell and into the back of the net and Merthyr had a deserved second goal which effectively sealed the game.

We continued to attack and saw the game out easily and could have increased our lead when Bauza intercepted a Wimborne throw near their 18 yard area.  He pushed it through towards Williams and he got it through to McLaggon and he shot it into the net past Harvell but unfortunately for him and Merthyr he was in an offside position.  Jenkins then robbed Arnold and got into the area and sent the ball across towards McLaggon but Harvell made a good interception to get it away for a throw.  The after another good move from the resulting throw involving Davies & Bauza the ball came to Williams.  He approached the D where he was well tackled by Blake but the ball came back out to Bauza, who held the ball up and pushed it out towards Williams on the left.  He gave it to Jenkins who came inside and slipped it across the pitch to Harris who sent in a shot from about 30 yards which went just over the bar. Williams then picked the ball up in the Merthyr half and sent a defence splitting pass through to Traylor who broke clear and ran towards goal but the ball bobbled a bit and he overrun it and Harvell was able to come out and get to the ball at Traylor’s feet and the chance was lost.

Wimborne did manage one break when a ball came in from their left and found Stokoe who sent in a good shot which Cutlan did very well to get down to and he made an excellent save and got the ball clear.

Just before the end Prosser replaced Bauza and he managed to head on a Cutlan clearance towards McLaggon but Maybury got in and the ball went for a throw.  Summerfield took the throw to McLaggon who went to the corner flag and gained another throw close to the byline.  Summerfield took the throw but Wimborne hoiked it clear into the Merthyr half and all the way through to Cutlan.

Shortly afterwards, the referee blew the final whistle and Merthyr had won 2-0 consolidating their position at the top of the table.

It was a good professional performance yesterday with everyone contributing.  Cutlan was excellent in the Merthyr goal making a couple of excellent saves and the defence in front of him allowed little through and between them they earned a good clean sheet.  Our midfield, particularly Harris also did well with Bauza & Williams having some good touches.  Upfront, Jenkins continued to impress on the left and Traylor and McLaggon were their usual selves.
With both Stratters & Diddy drawing we have extended our lead at the top and will go into Christmas and the New Year in fine fettle.  It was also great to see one of our u19’s in the squad and several of them are training with the firsts.

Our support yesterday was excellent and the welcome from everyone in Wimborne was superb and it’s quickly becoming one of my favourite grounds to visit.

Onwards & upwards, lads!

Awesome trip yesterday to Wimborne.

Sent a text to Matt Martyr at half 9 asking if he had plans and mentioned an away trip so drove down and worth it.

Good performance throughout against an organised team defensively but seemed to lack the thought process when going forward at times so resorted to route one. Pitch not the best with the slope and up hill at times but the boys kept the pressure on to pick up the 3 points. That goals one end of the pitch wasn't even square! One post lower than the other!

Not had chance to look at the go pro camera yet but will do later tonight and should be able to put the goals up. A few fans may see themselves celebrating in the footage too.

Great welcome from the Wimborne chairman and a decent bar and food avail.

Will be travelling up to Bishops Cleeve on New Years day with a car full and looking forward to it.

Cracking day fair play!

Wimborne are a strong team off the ball in all fairness. Their 2 centre backs kept us quiet in the final third for long periods so it was great to convert our chances. How Kayne scored at that angle is beyond me. Another great display and I do sense that there is a professional attitude in our squad that's getting the job done. Let's keep up the momentum!

The boxing day fixture is shaping up to be class. Was at the 4-4 thriller last season and as I recall they brought a fair few with them. Should have a decent gate for that

No public transport on Boxing Day so if anyone can offer a lift to fans who wish to attend, I am sure this would help the gate.
I will be away over Christmas so will miss the game. Hope all concerned can arrange three more points!

Attendance of 386 at PP for last season's cracker.

Be nice to beat that on Friday.

Should have the goals from Saturday posted in the next 15 minutes.

No editing- first time using the go pro properly at the football so hopefully use it more at future games.

Build up to Jarrad Wright's goal

Kayne's goal- Apologies about moving the camera over to the goal when I did as we thought the ball would be squared for someone to finish not put it in the net like he did!
