Tonight's team:
Price;
Strand,Carter - oops, wrong sort of report!
Accounts were given covering the year ended 31 August 2013.
Sponsorship income had increased yet again.
A reduction in bar income was put down to the fact that no pre-season friendlies were able to be held at Penydarren Park last summer, plus two home games in August having to be played at Cinderford. Conversely, a reduction in the cost of bar supplies was put down to the same reason.
A big rise in 'miscellaneous income' was put down to the prize money from the FA Cup and Trophy runs last season.
In summary, it was expected that the club would be breaking even at the end of June - i.e. no debts! Although not being able to produce any figures to support it, my personal impression is that's been the case ever since Merthyr Town was formed. Whilst I don't know much about such things, the profit and loss account did show an increase in the Operating Profit from the year before.
Certain sponsors were helping with the payment of wages to some of the players signed since the start of the season.
The 3G pitch has meant much more activity at Penydarren Park than before. It was being well used in evenings and at weekends, and overall its operation was breaking even. It was pointed out it had meant no loss of income this season from postponed matches being rearranged.
In a discussion about VAT, it was mentioned that of the various organisations that receive grants from Merthyr Council the club is the only one that needs to pay VAT on anything.
Regarding the developments to the ground, the demolition of Strikers and the work on the car park and entrance road, etc had been delayed due to the finalising of further grants as part of the council's big plans for the redevelopment of the Pontmorlais area - it was pointed out that something was already being done to the YMCA building, and I noticed on my way home that the rubble/vegetation on the Promenade at the front of it had been cleared away. More details were expected to be known at the end of April, with a grant to be spent over the next two years.
The work at the ground would include developments to the main stand in addition to what had been mentioned before about extending the Candac, and the building itself. There would also be new dressing rooms. Work would also include the repair of the terracing at the Theatre End, and a new roof on the terracing opposite the main stand.
Work could start in October and although it was not ideal in having to be done during the season, it was a condition of the grant as to when the money had to be spent.
It was suggested that a committee of volunteers be formed to manage various aspects of the operation of the ground while the work was being carried out.
There had been no problems with local residents while the work on the new pitch installation was being carried out, and it was hoped it would be the same when the development work was being done.
Listening to it all, I'd just like to finish by saying well done to the Board and Brent Carter for the way the club is being run. And that's without all the volunteers - I should say other volunteers, because that's what the Board are after all - without whom it wouldn't function at all. A monetary value of the work done by volunteers had been estimated at £106,000 per year, but it was stressed that more volunteers were always needed.

Re: New date for AGM Wed 26 March
Yes thanks Malcolm for that excellent summary of proceedings, one thing that concerns me (and a few others!) is that we were under the impression the 3G pitch was going to make a profit once it was being hired out regularly, can someone explain why this is not the case

Re: New date for AGM Wed 26 March
The decision to proceed with the installation of the 3g pitch was taken by the membership in August 2012. The proposal to install the pitch outlined the fact that while it might be possible to make a profit from hire of the pitch, in line with other clubs, members were asked to vote on the basis that we would cover costs.
This enabled us to provided a football facility, which would be available for use by all, meeting one of the club's prime objectives of promoting football in the community.
the installation of this community facility has made it easier to proceed with the request for substantial further grants to upgrade the infrastructure at Penydarren Park - a task the club could never undertake on its own.
There was also the added advantage of installing new floodlights.
Until we have completed a full year we will not know if there is an opportunity for a profit from the pitch, but it is not likely in the short term that we will see large profits, unless some major daytime users can be recruited, which do not appear on the horizon at the moment.
There are tangential gains from the existence of the 3g pitch, such as the reduction in postponements which would cost about £600 per game, because of lower gates on Tuesday nights. There are also increased bar takings resulting from some of the hire opportunities, and the ability to run children's football festivals which will result in several thousands of pounds income over the year.
