MERTHYR Town boss Gary Shephard insists his table-toppers can make home advantage count with four of their next five games being played at Taffs Well – starting tomorrow against Bradford Town (3pm), writes Mark Bloom.
The Martyrs have opened up a seven-point lead at the top of the Western League Division One table and Shephard feels that an unbeaten run at home over the next few weeks would put his side within touching distance of the title and promotion to the Premier Division.
It is vital that the club are promoted this season with plans to return to Penydarren Park next term very much in the pipeline – and Shephard says the players must play their part in the bigger picture.
“These players have never been in a position where they go into every game as favourites,” explained Shephard.
“Yes, there is an extra pressure that comes with that, but it’s a nice pressure and they have to learn that.
“We are the best team in the division and everybody wants to put one over on us and it’s up to the players to be up for every game, because if we are not we will get done for and now is not the time to go on a bad run.
“Most of the hard work has been done in getting to the top of the tree, now we need to produce football that says we are the team to beat in this division.
“We all want to return to Penydarren Park as champions and not getting promoted is not an option for us.
“The only thing to stop it happening is ourselves – it’s in our own hands.”

Despite spending yesterday evening at his delayed Christmas party followed by a visit to the CANDAC Mr Mack junior was up bright and early this morning to take a trip to Taffs Well. There are no problems with the pitch so we have a game to look forward today.

BBC web weather forecast for Taffs Well today - cloudy - no mention of rain.
