Re: MERTHYR v Wells
Today's team:
Perry;
Welsh,A.Thomas,Hartshorn;
Williams,Leek,A.Griffiths,Traylor,Howe;
Shephard,Prosser;
Subs:
Dorrian for Howe after about 59 minutes
M.Griffiths for Prosser after about 73 minutes
Adams for Leek after about 84 minutes
J.Thomas
Newall
We almost scored after 2 minutes when a right wing corner was headed on at the near post to be cleared off the line. The ball came to Lee Hartshorn, but his shot from 8 yards was well off target.
After about 8 minutes, following another corner, Ryan Prosser had a header come back off the bar before being cleared.
Wells could hardly get out of their own half, and we made the pressure pay after about 12 minutes when a long throw on the right was cleared as far as Alun Gritthiths on the opposite side. He put over a cross for Steve Williams to score with a header across goal.
A couple of minutes later the ball came to Garry Shephard on the edge of the area and he put a shot a foot wide of the post.
After about 21 minutes it was 2-0. Ian Traylor nutmegged a defender on the right and put a ball across the 6-yard area. Garry Shephard missed it, bur Ryan Prosser, beyond him, turned it into the net.
Wells came into the game a bit more then, winning their first corner after about 30 minutes, and with Joe Perry having to make a couple of not-very-difficult saves. A minute before the interval Perry had to push away a long shot from the right for a corner. There was still time for a good reaction save from the Wells keeper from a close-range effort by Andrew Thomas after a corner. This had been won by Ian Traylor after he slipped a defender on the half way line wide on the left and set off on a mazy run into the area.
Two minutes after the break the game was effetcively over at 3-0 after Garry Shephard retained possession well midway in the Wells half. He threaded a pass through to Ian Traylor on the left and his ball across the area found Alun Griffiths 7 yards out to slot it into the net.
After about 54 minutes Ryan Prosser's near post header from a corner went across the goalmouth and was deflected out for a corner on the other side as we were inches away from scoring again.
Just before the hour mark Ryan Dorrian came on for Jack Howe, with Lee Hartshorn going to left back as we played 4-3-3 with Ian Traylor wide on the left. About 3 minutes later Ian Traylor won a penalty when a defender was adjudged to have handled as Traylor tried to lift the ball over him. Ryan Prosser sent the keeper the wrong way to score with no trouble..
After about 66 minutes Ian Traylor went down the left yet again and put the ball across for Garry Shephard to force the keeper to make a good save with his legs.
About 17 minutes from the end Marcus Griifiths came on for Ryan Prosser, and on 84 minutes Jamie Adams got a few more minutes in, replacing Kris Leek.
Wells pulled a scarcely-deserved goal back a minute from the end when a defensive header went straight to one of their players failry close in on the right of the area and it was returned into the net.
Garry Shephard had a particularly good first half, but overall Ian Traylor was probably man of the match for me. He had a hand in 3 of the goals, put in several dangerous in-swinging corners and especially in the second half tied the Wells defence in knots down the left. Kris Leek and Alun Griffiths ran the midfield, and Jason Welsh and Andrew Thomas were dominant in defence - at least until the late goal by Wells. But it was a good team performance. As with Street last week, we outclassed the opposition.
It doesn't seem long since people were saying on here that we needed to sign a striker, but we seem to be managing OK, with 14 goals in the last 4 matches.
Attendance of 451 was a very good improvement on last week (in good weather) - maybe those who stayed away last week and missed the 5-1 win thought they'd come back. I don't think they'd have been disappointed!
Of the current run of 3 home games, this one appeared the most difficult on paper, with the easiest (on paper) to come next week. We'll see!

Re: MERTHYR v Wells
I wonder if there is any information on how many Cardiff City fans were present to take advantage of the admission discount. I saw two for certain as I went in, one who is also a Merthyr supporter anyway! And I saw a number of people I didn't know who may have been Cardiff fans.
I don't know if there is any feedback on the scheme.
I think the gate could have been higher still but I noticed quite a number of regular supporters were not there. On the other hand, there were a number of fans at the game who were regulars years ago, which was encouraging.
So, altogether good to see the attendance figure.
Merthyr played all the football and it was really a one-sided encounter
