Add a commentRecommend MERTHYR Town are off to Wembley Stadium – to fight for a quick return to Penydarren Park.

The Western League Martyrs have had an application to move back to their own Penydarren Park ground turned down and the appeal is to be heard by the Football Association in London.

“We’ve been told it will be at Wembley Stadium,” says Merthyr Town official Anthony Hughes. “We haven’t been given an exact date yet, but it will be in the week starting Monday, January 10.”

Merthyr Town currently play matches out of Rhiw Ddar in Taffs Well, but are keen for a return to the bigger pitch at their own Penydarren Park.

Their bid was turned down by Toolstation Western League officials, but will have an appeal heard in London.

The FA have written to the League asking for their thoughts, while Merthyr have submitted a full appeal.

Merthyr Town, who stand second in Division One just behind Oldland Abbotonians with a game in hand, have been without a match for more than three weeks.

Their next scheduled match is at home against Portishead on Monday, January 3, followed by Melksham Town away in Wiltshire the following Saturday.

Merthyr manager Garry Shephard has also arranged a friendly against Welsh League AFC Porth. That is due to be played at Penydarren Park on Tuesday, December 28.

The break has meant Ryan Dorrian is fit again after injury, but Cortez Belle is yet to start a seven-match suspension imposed after he was sent off for the third time
