After a very poor last season, some success has been somewhat hyped up this season. The squad was prepared ready for Div 1 of the SL so having been reprieved, the team hasn't done too badly in the Premier. On the other hand, the home form hasn't been that good, Merthyr failing to beat Div 1 opposition in The FA Cup against Cirencester ( winning the replay) or AFC Totton (FA Trophy).
Three of the league wins came versus newly-promoted sides feeling their feet - Winchester home, North Leigh and Plymouth Parkway on their travels. The win at Salisbury was a good achievement. There have been only four wins at home out of 10 in all matches, two in FA Cup (The second half against Truro was amazing) and two in the league.
It seems to be a problem when key men are missing. The difficulty when trying to strengthen the squad is that Merthyr players are all non-contract. They can sign as many as they like but they get paid only when they are in the squad. It's a gamble for someone to sign if he thinks he won't feature regularly, especially with the wages being paid out by such JD Cymru teams such as Pontytpridd even, who hardly have any spectators.
If Merthyr can finish midway this season, it will have been an improvement. Whichever starting line-up is at Buxton, they can only do their best. And Merthyr have done well to reach the Frst Round Proper.
I have brought in six new supporters this season and they have enjoyed the games though disappointed at some results. Lots of games to come!
