The headline in the Merthyr Express was Merthyr Town v Exeter City – Brilliant Football.
Exeter City were the easiest of victims to a livelier, cleverer home side at Penydarren Park.  Merthyr ran out 7-1 winners to move into 7th place in their first season in the third division of the English Football League. Playing a starring role was Rees Williams who would be capped for Wales shortly afterwards, and later in the decade go on to play for Man Utd for two seasons.

The following Monday Merthyr Townhosted Newport County beating them 1-0 in the Welsh Cup.

Top of the 15 team Merthyr Schools Football League was Georgetown, with Castle in second place.

In the Welsh Schools Shield Ebbw vale beat Cardiff schools 2-1 and were due to meet Merthyr in the next round.
