Guillermo Bauza and Gavin Williams set for Merthyr Town return in Southern League clash with Swindon Supermarine
Wales On Line

Merthyr Town could have both Guillermo Bauza and Gavin Williams available in central midfield for their Evo-Stik Southern League match at Swindon Supermarine on Saturday (3pm).

Bauza has completed a three-match suspension and returns to action, while Williams will have a late test on his Achilles injury.

Former West Ham player Williams was originally in Merthyr’s starting line-up before the 1-0 win at Evesham a week ago, but was forced to withdraw after the Achilles felt sore as he warmed up.

Hosts Swindon are 15th in the South and West table, having earned only 13 points at home and 21 away.

The Martyrs are nine points clear at the top and are unbeaten in their last 10 matches, having won nine and drawn one. They can strengthen their grip at the top over their next two fixtures because they follow Swindon away by playing second-placed Taunton Town at Penydarren Park on St Valentines Day, Saturday, February 14 (3pm).

Matthew Harris is fit again, while Ryan Prosser is also due back from injury and could be available for Saturday’s trip to Supermarine.

Merthyr have rearranged their League match at Bridgwater Town for Tuesday, March 10.

Red Insure Cup is not a bad fall back
Swindon Advertiser

DAVE Webb may see the Red Insure Cup as his side’s best prospect of honours this season, but the Swindon Supermarine boss is still intent on giving the Webbs Wood Stadium support something to cheer about in league matches.

Marine secured an encouraging goalless draw at North Leigh – their opponents back in Wiltshire in the Red Insure Cup quarter final.

That match – the last realistic hope of silverware - will undoubtedly be one of Marine’s biggest of the campaign, but Webb is determined that their league exploits doesn’t just peter out in the remaining weeks.

“We want to play well at home because it’s about enjoying our football,’’ he said. “The play-offs are gone but we can still give something back to the supporters at home. The boys were magnificent (at North Leigh) and that’s the sort of thing we want to see. Hopefully we can back that up with a positive result against Merthyr, who are top, on Saturday so hopefully we may be able to do something against them too.’’

Marine have doubts over Joe Shepherd, who was carried off against North Leigh after colliding with teammate Ross Adams. “He was virtually knocked out and had to come off so we’ll be taking a good look at him because you have to be careful with concussion,’’ added Webb.

Ryan Prosser is also due back from injury and could be available for Saturday’s trip to Supermarine.

It says in today's Merthyr Express he could be out for two more weeks.

Toughest test in store for Marine
Swindon Advertiser

SWINDON Supermarine chief Dave Webb is preparing his troops for the toughest game of the season as they play host to league leaders Merthyr Town.

The Welsh side have set the pace all season and are nine points clear at the top, having dropped just 12 all season.

Webb acknowledges Marine face a formidable challenge this weekend but insists they will not be rolling over at the Webb’s Wood Stadium. “It’s probably going to be the hardest game we have had this season given their position and the quality they have available to them,” said Webb.

“They are a big club in non-league terms and are trying to get back to where they were before. They will win the league comfortably, for me. From our perspective it’s another home game and I want the players to enjoy it and hopefully we can inflict just a second away defeat on them.”

Marine were due to host Mangotsfield United on Tuesday but that game fell foul of the weather.

And Webb hopes that has given Joe Shepherd, Chris Taylor, Scott Bevan and Ross Adams enough time to recover from their respective injuries.

One man who will definitely be missing for Marine this weekend is Dave Hockaday after his appointment as professional development coach at Coventry City.

Former Swindon Town player Hockaday has been assisting Webb since leaving his position as Leeds United head coach earlier this season. Webb said: “It was a pleasure to work with Dave. He’s an excellent coach and a gentleman. He’s been a great sound board, and I have learned things and I’m sure the players have too. We now need to look to bring someone in for the long term to help with what we want to do this season and beyond.”

Webb was also keen to wish near neighbours and former club Highworth Town well in their FA Vase clash away at Bradford Town. He said: “On behalf of everyone at Supermarine we’d like to send our best to Highworth in what’s probably the biggest game in their history.“
