2010 - a tumultuous year for the Martyrs Empty 2010 - a tumultuous year for the Martyrs

There follows a short account of the last 12 months which has been one of the most eventful for the club in recent times. Over the last year we have seen the following big changes in fortune.

New name
The year started with Merthyr Tydfil Football Club and ended with Merthyr Town Football Club. The current name and red and green team colours were resurrected from the 1930s, when the old Merthyr Town FC went out of business.

Reformed club
At the beginning of 2010 Merthyr Tydfil FC was in the hands of an administrator, the company having been put into administration by the Supporters Society, known as Martyrs to the Cause, in June 2009. During 2009/2010 the team was run by the Supporters Society under a trading agreement with the administrator. By the end of the year Merthyr Town FC had been reformed by the Supporters Society, now reorganised as Sports Club Community Mutual called the Merthyr Town FC Society. In practice the club was now owned by those supporters who chose to join the Society.

New league
The club started the year in the Southern League. Because the club was in administration, it started the season with a 10 point reduction. Despite avoiding relegation the club was relegated three steps to the First Division of the Toolstation Western League, a league in which the club competed 101 years ago, when it was won by neighbouring club Treharris.

New ground
The start of 2010 saw the club continuing its 101st year playing at Penydarren Park. The end of the season saw the old club going into liquidation, the administrator failing to find a buyer for the club, which meant that Penydarren Park, being unavailable. Luckily Taffs Well FC and agreed that Merthyr Town to play at the their ground.

The future
Following the liquidation of Merthyr Tydfil FC, the lease reverted to Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, who then offered the club a new short term lease in September on advantageous terms. The club therefore applied to return to Penydarren Park, but the application was refused by the Western League. The next step is an appeal hearing with the FA.

The Supporters
The very eventful and difficult year has seen the club survive, because of the many volunteers who have put in time, effort and money to keep the club going. Their efforts have been rewarded by the good crowds of up to 300 people who have made the trek to Taffs Well this season. However the club board is keen to return to Penydarren Park, because even after meeting the financial commitment made to Taffs Well for the rest of the season, there is a considerable saving by returning to Penydarren Park. Also the facilities at Taffs Well would not provide adequate protection against the elements if poor weather coincides with home games.
