Yes, I did say a draw would be a good result and we still have lost only once away in the league this season.

Post  Old Sod Sun Feb 24, 2013 3:10 am

It was a cold and raw day in Sholing yesterday but the way we started the game almost instantly warmed me up. We attacked from the off down the right and won a throw in level with the 18 yard area. It was crossed into the box and the Sholing defenders were at sixes and sevens although they did succeed in blocking a few goal bound shots as it resembled a pin ball game. Finally the ball landed at Prosser's feet about 14 yards out and he slammed the ball high into the net with keeper beaten by the sheer pace of the ball. All this happened in the space of 45 seconds. Is this the quickest goal scored by Merthyr Town? I'm sure the Imp will know. We pressed a bit more without creating much and then Sholing, who after our initial attack looked to have a well organised side came back into the game and it became end to end stuff with neither side really doing much in the last 3rd of the pitch. We were playing a 5-2-3 formation and we were looking a little stretched at times and the ball fell to their #2 on the right hand side just inside our half. He was allowed to come inside and advanced on goal without being closed down and sent in a low shot from about 25 yards which beat a despairing dive by Gilo who started off from a rather static position. Shortly after that Gilo misplaced a pass out of goal but redeemed himself with a superb one on one save from a Sholing forward. The rest of the half was rather uninspiring stuff and we got to half time 1 each.

Sholing started the 2nd half in a similar vein to the way we started the 1st and got themselves an early corner. It was a near post ball which was headed in well by a Sholing forward and it was a poor goal from our point of view as he'd slipped his marker. We were really struggling to get going despite the best efforts of Matthew Harris who had an excellent game continually probing & prompting but unfortunately our front 3 were having difficulty in holding the ball albeit on a hard and bumpy surface. Sholing were creating more than us and "lost" a few of our defenders in our area but rarely troubled Gilo. It was no surprise when Traylor replaced an ineffectual Preen and we did liven up a bit and we got the equaliser our improved play deserved when Prosser picked the ball up near the D, got past their centre half and slammed yet another unstoppable shot high into the net past a bewildered keeper who up until then had little to do other than pick the ball up out of the net after our first. The last 15 minutes was virtually all us and we looked better still when Cornwall replaced Marcus who had run his legs off. We created a few half chances, had a goal-bound shot cleared off the line with the keeper again beaten, Cornwall hit the top of the bar with a good free kick but we just couldn't get the winner and maybe had there been another 5 minutes on the clock we have done so. That being said we didn't really play to our full potential today and on reflection a draw was probably a fair result. Sholing look a more than useful side and will take points off other teams near the top before the season ends.

Prosser has certainly hit a rich vein of goalscoring form in recent months and as in the last few seasons has taken time but has adapted to the step up in ability of the defenders he's facing and is leading the line well. However Matthew gets my vote as MOTM for us as he was behind virtually everything half decent we did yesterday and gave the Sholing midfield very little time on the ball.

Sorry - can't think of any early goals off hand. I could tell you about the time Lincoln City scored twice in the first minute of a match, but you don't want to hear about that. It's like they say - when you're getting old you can remember things that happened 45 years ago (when that Lincoln match took place) better than you can remember what happened a few months ago!

Can you confirm we only made the two substitutions yesterday?

Mike Carter was, in fact, the scorer of Sholing's first goal, not as stated in the Wales on Sunday, Tyrone Bowers.

I'm all agog over the Lincoln factoid! Yes, only 2 subs yesterday - Traylor for Preen & Cornwall for Marcus.

Well, what to say...

Not as lot really, as Old Sod summary is pretty much spot on. I thought a draw was a fair result.
We’ve had a really warm welcome in the Southampton area this season – Sholings was as warm-hearted as we’d experienced. Just as well on a bitterly cold day.

Big thanks to “Dobby” who I understand is the manager of Sholings reserves – firstly for the lift back to Southampton, and secondly for returning my mobile phone I’d dropped in his van while we were chatting. Above and beyond the call of duty – the (non-alcoholic even) drink was the least I could do!

Best of luck to the Boatmen for the remainder of the season.

Speaking of factoids, don't miss a fascinating (?) one about Ryan Prosser in the match programme for the Cirencester game next week.
