Re: strikers club
It was the large social club at the ground which has been disused for the past few years because it fell into disrepair. It had a large hall, a big lounge and one time there was a separate bar also. It was the main social facility but when John Reddy was chairman, he also built the Candac Suite behind the grandstand as an additional bar facility. This is sufficient for the club at present.
The main problem at Strikers a few years ago was that it needed a new roof and the then board could not afford to attend to that, not surprising as Merthyr Tydfil FC were then as much as £600,000 in debt although no-one really seemed to know the exact figure.
So it was closed. It had helped the club financially over the years as besides being used on match days, there had been concerts there, Friday night dances etc and at one time Sunday lunches etc.It was built originally in the 1970s when Maldwyn Davies was the owner of Merthyr FC, as well as being the manager for a while. It was then called The Jubilee Club.
Merthyr Town now hope to build a function hall to supplement the Candac Suite as part of their plans for a 3G pitch and new floodlights etc.

Re: strikers club
On a more serious and sombre note, Strikers played a significant part in my more youthful days. I remember the "grab a granny" nights (actually, we usually did more than grab them!), wedding receptions, general "stopping off for a pint on the way to/from town", entertaining the Walsall when we played them a few years ago...., beer in hand waving off the Solihull coach that brought me & the youngster down the season we made the payoffs..., Halcyon days...
Anyhow, looking at it on the weekend fully understand why its being demolished. Still very sad after all the happy memories. Suspect a little bit of me will go with it when its finally pulled down...
Anyhow, onwards & upwards!

A lot of people miss Strikers but the past is the past. Some folk probably miss flared trousers and platform shoes and The Football Echo........and Housewives' Choice and The Billy Cotton Band Show...

Re: strikers club
I attended a couple of wedding receptions there in the 70's, usually stayed right through until the evening "do" and then usually ended up in Hing Hongs for a meal!

Strikers club
My abiding memory of strikers club was coming back to the old club after Merthyr had drawn with Newport county 2 2 in the first welsh cup final...the fans just knew that the cup had our name on it...the club was rocking with the fans ....a tremendous evening....boz

Re: strikers club
My abiding memory of Strikers was being among the last to leave after a Tuesday night match and waiting outside for a taxi home.
Solihull, Sinatra is one of my favourite singers! Also Vic Damone who I saw in Cardiff's St David's Hall when his friend Dihann Carroll sat next to me!

Re: strikers club
We used to have The Rhys Tavern Club- opposite to where the dressing rooms etc now are.
It was a Portakabin, basically, with an office at the end for the manager. That was Harry Griffiths' room when he came to P Park as the manager.
