Well done the Town. It's possible that the boys are getting into the groove at the right time, to push onwards and upwards. Excellant HOME win !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Other news. Hungerford have done us a favour beating Swindon Supermarine. It was the best result for us. Poole's game was postponed. It's hotting up at the top and the boys are starting to roll. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Today's team:-

Cutlan;
Williams,Thomas,Colborne,Howe;
Jones,Davies,Harris,Newman;
Cornwall,Prosser;

Subs:
M.Griffiths for Cornwall after about 75 minutes
Preen for Jones at the same time
Newall
Traylor

Only four subs. Kris Leek still missing, along with Alun Griffiths and Jamie Rewbury. Andrew Thomas preferred to Jon Newall in a change to a back four. In midfield we had Nathan Davies and Matthew Harris sitting back, with Luke Jones and Ryan Newman pushing forward.

After about 10 minutes Ryan Newman was fouled on the edge of the area. He took the free kick himself, which was well pushed away by the goalkeeper.

Mangotsfield had a good chance after about 16 minutes when their no. 9 cleverly beat the defence to get to a clearance from his goalkeeper, but his shot was very well saved by Giles Cutlan.

About 3 minutes later at the other end good work by Ryan Newman put Aaron Cornwall through on the right of the area, but his shot hit the post.

We took the lead after about 32 minutes when Steve Williams was fouled out near the touchline. He put the free kick over himself, and it fell for Ryan Prosser at the far post to hit it into the roof of the net. A minute before the break he hit the far post with a shot from the left, and when the ball rebounded to Luke Jones his follow-up effort was cleared off the line.

We deserved the lead at half time, with Mangotsfield only really having the one chance, and it was just to be hoped that we wouldn't regret not having made it 2-0 just before the break.

About 10 minutes into the second half Matthew Harris was nearly played in by Ryan Prosser after a good interchange of passing, but the ball was just taken away from him.

With about 15 minutes to go we freshened things up a little, with Aaron Cornwall and Luke Jones being replaced by Marcus Griffiths and Garyn Preen as we switched to 4-3-3. The substitution paid off 5 minutes later, Marcus Griffiths being on hand to swing over a corner from the left for Gary Colborne to head in at the far post for his first goal at Penydarren Park. 5 minutes later Ryan Newman did well to win the ball, then played a neat pass to put Ryan Prosser through on the left of the area and flick the ball past the keeper and inside the far post.

This was a good performance - Mangotsfield may not have been the best side we've played at home this season, but they weren't the worst either. We could have had the game won by half time, and while we didn't look in too much trouble at 1-0 we could never relax, but finished much the stronger - good substitutions, I thought. It was a good team performance, and the best players for me were Ryan Newman and Nathan Davies - not forgetting Ryan Prosser, who's now got 5 goals in 3 games. Nathan Davies maybe shades it - he was always there in midfield, wherever the ball was, he was.

The changes we had to make to the team for this game really show the strength of the squad at the moment.

Attendance of 335 was practically the same as on New Year's Day, which I thought wasn't too bad considering the weather conditions today. There was good travelling support from Mangotsfield, so full marks to them.

Yeah thats pretty much it- we were unlucky not to kill em off within the first 20 mins. Felt in the second half we were working harder work of it- but that made those goals all the sweeter.

Post  Old Sod Sat Jan 12, 2013 12:42 pm

It was more like our away performances today with the midfield not allowing the Mangos to settle on the ball and if it wasn't for Sawyer in the Mangos goal we'd have won more convincingly than we did. He made at least 3 really good saves and we hit the woodwork twice so I don't think the Mangos could complain at their defeat. Defensively we again played well although in all honesty we were not put under too much pressure and it was nice to see Tubbsy & Jack get a game although Badger was unlucky to be left out after his last 2 performances. However that does demonstrate the strength of our squad and Garry & Danny are rotating the team well keeping the players on their toes. Nathan & co in the middle all played well and it's great to see Prosser back to his best and he took his both goals excellently, particularly his second and he obviously is riding high confidence wise at the moment. We have stepped up levels over the last few seasons and it does take time to adjust playing against more organised teams and better defenders and Pross now seems to have done so. I thought Colborne had an excellent game today and took his goal well and after scoring for us at the Mangos earlier this season he obviously enjoys playing against his former club.

With Hungerford beating Submarine today again the results have fallen well for us and we seem to be on a roll and another win on Tuesday will let all the other teams at the top know we mean business.

I know. But it was as cold at Solihull as it was in Merfa, so my fingers were too numb to edit.

Colbourne was his usual resilient self...great as the last line of defence and deadly in the air in attack....certainly player of the season so far....Ryan Prosser proved he is a 20 goal a season player...new signing Cornwall...is the perfect foil for Prosser his touch is exquisite....matty Harris again is a great playmaker with the ball at his feet he can do anything....Nathan Davies also had a good game...he has grown into the role...Marcus provided great width and speed against a tired back four.....3 - 0 did not flatter us....the term you've been mangoed.....was added to the dictionary tonight....keep it up lads....looking forward to Tuesday already. MERTHYR v Mangotsfield Empty MERTHYR vs Mangotsfield

Post  hirwaunman Sat Jan 12, 2013 2:54 pm

Yes, let's hear it for Gilo. Sure, he slices the occasional clearance - but what keeper doesn't? Above all, he's confident and brave, not afraid to come for high balls or go down at the feet of opposing forwards, and he's an excellent shot-stopper. Obviously the defence as a whole is pretty tight, but it must reinforce their confidence to have a reliable keeper. He's been a very valuable acquisition.

Agreed - we only tend to talk about goalkeepers when they either make a mistake or superb saves. Their bread and butter work of dealing with crosses, making competent saves and giving confidence to the defence in front of them goes unnoticed and Gilo is good at that and he has certainly been more than a useful acquisition this season. keep it up, matey!

Nah, brain numb due to alcohol! Came from 0-1 down to win 2-1 with virtually the last (free) kick of the game!

Always difficult when you have to play against 12 men.

Merthyr Town 3 Mangotsfield United 0
Anthony Woolford, South Wales Echo

MERTHYR have now obtained a maximum 12 points from 12 since the turn of the year and will be hoping to maintain that form when Cirencester Town visit Penydarren Park tomorrow evening (7.45pm).

More importantly perhaps is that Merthyr’s two home games during that time have brought maximum points as it has been at their usually fortress-type home where they have stuttered this season.

Assistant manager Danny Carter was delighted with the performance against Mangotsfield where Merthyr controlled the game for long periods and thoroughly deserved their margin of victory but is now looking for the group of players to go on and replicate their away form at home on a regular basis for the rest of the season. “These lads are good enough to beat any team in this league if they apply themselves,” he commented following their latest success. “They have already proved that. And I am hoping that the lads have started to believe that themselves after the last two home games.”

Ryan Prosser gave Merthyr a half-time lead after a 45 minutes dominated by the home side. They continued to look dangerous throughout, but did have a little more to do defensively in the first 20 minutes of the second half.

However, once Gary Colbourne headed the second from six yards they were fully in control and Prosser got his second on 83 minutes to wrap up the win.

Cirencester will come to Merthyr on the back of a 2-2 draw with Cinderford on Saturday and will be looking for revenge as it was the Martyrs who knocked them out of the FA Cup back in August.

Prosser's double sinks United
Bristol Post

PROMOTION-chasing Merthyr finished comfortable winners against Mangotsfield, who remain just above the relegation zone in Division One South & West.

A combination of goalkeeper Kevin Sawyer and the woodwork kept Mangotsfield in touching distance at the half-time break, with Merthyr only having Ryan Prosser's close-range strike on 31 minutes to show for their superiority. Marcus Duharty had Mangotsfield's only real chance of the half, which Giles Cutlan saved.

Mangotsfield started the second half well and Kyle Tooze combined with Shaun Lamb, only for Cutlan to smother the effort. Merthyr continued to create chances, but Tooze missed a good opportunity to equalise at the far post.

Gary Colbourne headed in Merthyr's second goal from a 77th-minute corner, and Prosser slid home the third on 83 minutes.
