Today's team:

Cutlan;
Thomas,Rewbury,Colborne;
Williams,Harris,Davies,Newman,A.Griffiths;
Preen,Traylor;

Subs:
M. Griffiths for Thomas (after about 57 minutes)
Prosser for Preen (at the same time)
Leek for Davies (also at the same time)
Welsh
Newall

I gather Aaron Cornwall's clearance was not, after all, through in time for him to play today.

We were 0-1 down after about 6 minutes when an attacker beat Andrew Thomas on the left and was able to take the ball along the goal line and play it across, where it appears it was deflected off Gary Colborne into the net.

For the rest of the half we were generally poor, frequently giving the ball away and generally sloppy. About 11 minutes before half time Giles Cutlan had to make a good save at the near post after an attacker stepped past Andrew Thomas on the right.

Thankfully we were only a goal down at half time and so still in with a chance. but we looked out of touch in all areas of the field.

The second half carried on where the first left off, but after about 52 minutes Garyn Preen put in a good 20-yard shot which the keeper did well to push away.

Just before the hour mark we made a triple substitution, and although almost anybody could have been taken off, it was Nathan Davies, Garyn Preen and Andrew Thomas who were as we changed to a 4-3-3, with Marcus Griffiths, Prosser and Traylor up front.

But Yate were still able to cope with anything we could manage against them, while only having a few off-target shots themselves.

It looked as if we'd rescued a point about 7 minutes from the end when Ryan Prosser and Marcus Griffiths combined well on the left of the Yate area to send Ian Traylor through to the touchline and square the ball across goal for Jamie Rewbury to turn it into the net from close in. Briefly the hope was that we could go on and get a winner, but instead it was Yate who did so, almost straight away. They attacked down the left, and we were unable to get a tackle in on a player who put in a shot which Cutlan pushed away, but Yate had a player on hand to put it into the net.

We had Giles Cutlan to thank for Yate not making it 3-1, with two good saves, one at the near post, and one palming a shot over the bar. At the other end the Yate keeper somehow stuck out a leg to prevent a shot in a bit of a scramble from looping over him into the net.

But overall, it was a fair result, and we really had a disappointing off day after those two good away wins. No point in picking out players who looked out of sorts as there were too many of them.

Unfortunately, we looked more like the team who were bottom of the league today.
It was a bad afternoon all-round and we just weren't at the races I'm afraid!

After the Lord Mayor's show on Monday we had the Chumps Farce today as we were awful. What's the difference in the way we play as we turn it on away from home but we are invariably poor at home which leads to less people coming in through the turnstile which means less money for the club. The only thing I can think of is the playing surface. It was poor in Winchester last week but we were able to cope with that as we were playing a poorer side than Yate were today. Looking at the pitch it looks worse down the Walk end than it does at the Theatre end and it can't be a coincidence that we did threaten a bit more in the 2nd half today and that was before the triple substitutions. In saying that the 2 goals we gave away today was as a result of poor defending. The first one was the result of us allowing a Yate player a free run along the byline and the second was rank bad defending as we failed to get a foot on the ball when a Yate player seemed to have all the time in the world to waltz (I'm watching Strictly with Mrs OS) through our area shortly after Rewbs had slid in our equaliser after good work on the left allowed Traylor to send in one of the few decent crosses we achieved today.

Should we fail to make the play offs as far as I'm concerned there'll be only one thing to blame and something needs to be done about it NOW. Can we play all our games away, please?

Sorry – all a bit National today: updated in the main by a fella in Aintree, whilst I watched Newton Aycliffe pull of a surprise – if not undeserved – 2-1 win over once-league Darlington. Looks like today was the day of the surprise result all round…

Or are Yate just our bogey side?

Yate leave it late
Wales On Sunday

SIX days after crushing league leaders Hungerford at home, Merthyr succumbed to bottom side Yate at Penydarren Park and can have few complaints. They were sluggish all over the field and it was the visitors who deservedly took the points.

Matt Groves’ jinking run along the by-line on six minutes presented Yate with the opener, his low cross being turned into his own net by Gary Colbourne.

A poor kick out from Merthyr keeper Giles Cutlan almost let Michael Meacher in, but Colbourne deflected his goal bound effort wide.

Two low drives across the face of the Yate goal was the best the hosts could muster before the break. But a Garyn Preen shot on the turn from 20 yards on 52 minutes had to be scrambled around the post by Yate keeper Josh Dempsey.

A triple substitution on the hour saw Merthyr change to a flat back four. And seven minutes from time Ian Traylor skipped down the right and fired a low cross into the box that was turned in by Jamie Rewbury. But Yate regained the lead within a minute, Groves turning four defenders in the box.

His shot was parried by Cutlan, but there was Harley Purnell who turned the ball into the empty net for the winner.

THE poorest performance of the season was how Merthyr boss Garry Shephard described the 90 minutes at Penydarren Park on Saturday, which saw bottom-side Yate take all three points.

Yate were ahead inside six minutes when Martyrs defender Gary Colbourne turned Matt Groves’ dangerous cross into his own net from close range.

Shephard introduced Kris Leek, Marcus Griffiths and Ryan Prosser into the fray on the hour.

Then, with just seven minutes remaining Ian Traylor escaped on the left and his low driven cross was turned in by Jamie Rewbury for the equaliser.

Merthyr’s hopes were raised momentarily but just 60 second later some extremely poor defending saw the visitors regain the lead when Harley Purnell was on hand to turn home the loose ball.
