MERTHYR Town boss Garry Shephard has warned his players not to take third-placed Devizes lightly after their record 8-1 victory over Shewton Town last week, writes Mark Bloom.
The Martyrs beat Devizes 5-0 earlier in the season, but the visitors come into this game unbeaten in 12 league fixtures and Shephard wants his side, who lead the table by 11 points, to be on their guard and ready to dig in.
“We had a great win last week and I knew we had that kind of result in us,” said Shephard.
“But Devizes will be a different proposition altogether and we have to be prepared to do the ugly stuff before we can play the football we are capable of.
“Last week we worked hard first and then got what we deserved later in the game and tomorrow will be more or less the same.
“Though we had a good result up there (5-0), they will be in a much better frame of mind now.
“We simply cannot afford to slip up now having made a solid platform to build from and we really need to put this fixture to and gain maximum points and stretch our lead at the top.”
Shephard revealed that hat-trick striker from last week Craig Stiens was earmarked for the bench before an untimely injury to midfield playmaker Tariq Khalil before the game.
