North Leigh make their first visit
Ian Caleb, Celtic Sport
MERTHYR Town welcome North Leigh for what is be believed to be their first visit to Penydarren Park on Saturday (3pm). With the Martyrs challenging for a third successive promotion, they face a side who smashed six goals, without reply, against away team Thame United in Saturday's FA Cup Preliminary Round.
During the week North Leigh, Oxfordshire, earned a 3-1 triumph at Cirencester, who themselves went on to lose to Merthyr in the FA Cup at the weekend.
Garry Shephard and Danny Carter have tackled some selection problems at the start of this campaign. Their slender win against Shortwood United in their first home game was achieved with seven players ruled out as a result of injuries, work commitments and holidays – a problem at non-league level.
After the Cup win, Merthyr play in the first qualifying round a week on Saturday at league rivals Cinderford Town who knocked them out of the competition last season in a replay in the Forest of Dean.
Next Monday September 3, the Martyrs continue their busy start to this season by travelling to Mangotsfield in the league.
