Just read the Manager's comments on the game. Another great effort by the players, staff and fans concerned. This will go down as one of the most traumatic seasons in the club's history (and there have been quite a few), but it will also be remembered for inspirational leadership and for determination and dedication on and off the pitch which shows that loyalty in football is alive and well and living in Merthyr.
Thankfully, whatever else may happen, next season's league restructuring should bring about an end to journeys such as this one, which are bad enough on Saturdays but intolerable on weeknights. Well done to all who made the effort.

ROYSTON TOWN 5 MERTHYR 1 – Tuesday, 13th March
After a run of 10 points from 4 games, the cash-strapped Martyrs were up against it from the start on Tuesday, with a much-depleted squad making the long journey around the M25 to Royston Town. However, the 5-1 defeat was a harsh result against a side still hoping for a play-off place. The youth players, strengthened by a few older heads, did us proud, winning compliments from the home support for their spirit and skill, and genuinely staying in the game at 2-1 until as late as the 80th minute.
With a 7-55pm arrival at the ground through heavy traffic for a revised 8-15 kick-off, the mood was set for a rear-guard action, but this was no ‘Chesham’. These young Martyrs have learned quickly from that experience and other opportunities. Meanwhile, slightly more battle-scarred players like Miles John and Harry Franklin took their share of responsibility, while Craig Reddy, Kerry Morgan and skipper Matthew Harris were the backbone. Up front, new signing Owain Jones was a fully committed Martyr, leading the line for 70 minutes before being withdrawn. So, credit to all, Merthyr were genuinely competitive.
The early action saw Ed Hewitson gather a cross and make a smart save from a free-kick to get the feel of the game, but Merthyr were having their share of the ball. Royston keeper Josh Tibbets dived full length to push a long shot for a corner, from which the ball broke invitingly loose. A chance not taken.
Danger man Adam Marriott, who played regularly for National League champions Lincoln City last season, announced his threat in the 17th minute when he seized on a loose ball and hit it over the bar. In the 22nd minute the same man ended a run with a rasping shot past Hewitson. 1-0 to Royston.
Merthyr had been playing good, controlled football from the back and down the flanks, and were unlucky to be behind. And so it continued after the goal, with Miles John bursting forward into the penalty area and being brought down for a clear penalty. Owain Jones’ spot kick was low, hard and to the left of Tibbets to give us a well-deserved equaliser after 25 minutes.
Adam Murray headed Royston in front again from a corner after 30 minutes, but Merthyr completed the first-half confidently. The threat that Royston’s experienced front-men posed was always ominous against a Merthyr defence generally lacking height, but Merthyr carried their own threat, and might have had the benefit of the doubt with a marginal offside decision when Owain Jones netted. Southern League linesmen have been a bit flag-happy against us recently.
The second half was always likely be a trial of strength, but there was no hint of surrender from the Merthyr squad. Ed Hewitson improves by the match, and is the equal of any keeper in terms of courage, motivation and organisation. Others too put their bodies on the line, most notably Craig Reddy who at one point threw himself at the ball three times to block shots in one move by Scott Bridges.
Merthyr were finding it ever harder to get deep into Royston territory, but the odd half-chance was still being created from proper footballing moves down the flanks. Owain Jones had the ball in the net again in a near re-run of his first-half effort.
Tired bodies caught up with Merthyr at about 9-55pm. All able-bodied substitutes had been used, with Adam Vine asked to battle up-front and Dean Clarke coming on to defend the cause, all of 21 years, apparently, after his Merthyr debut.
With knocks and strains mounting, the Martyrs were down to 10 men for the last quarter. Royston duly increased the pressure with their greater resources, and saw the game out with three late goals, with 78, 81 and 85 minutes on the clock, all scored by the lethal Adam Marriott.
Gavin Williams can take great pride from the fact that whoever is on the pitch for the Martyrs will show full commitment. In turn, players clearly enjoy playing for Gavin and are encouraged by him to express themselves in the game.

Merthyr 1-11;
Ed Hewitson; Harry Franklin; Miles John; Craig Reddy; Daniel Dima; Matthew Harris; Lee Price; Marcus Hobakken; Owain Jones; Kerry Morgan; Adam Mahagan.
Used subs; Adam Vine; Dean Clarke.

Boz,
You're a man of dubious taste, but on this occasion I'm prepared to give you the benefit of the doubt.
LOL. Thanks!

'Dubious taste'.

I am afraid you lost me with that one.

Not having been to Royston, it was interesting to read your account.

A scoreline is only part of the picture.

Eyewitness reports much better.

I assume autocorrect changed 'obvious' for 'dubious'.

Whatever it was....it was a genuinely a great factual report and read and unlike my efforts written from Planet Earth.

It has been said before, that on this forum we are blessed with a number of different correspondents with differing styles but all which bring reading pleasure to those who can't make the matches for one reason or another and to others who simply devote their every waking to moment to the club.

Great people one and all.
